Lin

The small fishing village of Lin near Pogradec is one of the most beautiful places on the Albanian side of Ohrid Lake. Its amazing location under a cliff on the lake’s shores has made it a popular tourist destination. You can take a boat ride or see the remains of an early Christian church.

The village crouches in a bay below a prominent rock promontory jutting into Ohrid Lake. At its far end stands a bunker, which offers fantastic views of the lake and the Galičica Mountains in North Macedonia.

Standing just above the village on a hilltop are the ruins of a sixth-century early Christian basilica. The foundations of the walls have already been restored enough to give you an idea of its layout. The floors used to be covered with mosaics, one of which has survived and is hidden under a sheet. It depicts two peacocks eating grapes as well as other natural and religious motifs. The grounds are fenced but the gate can be unlocked by the person in charge (+355 676 399 436).

The village has a mosque, church, several restaurants, a campsite and several private accommodations. It’s also easy to get here by public transport: get off at the turn-off to the village from any bus going from Pogradec to Tirana or vice versa. It is then barely a 15-minute walk. If you are arriving by car, park it in the town square and, unless necessary, avoid taking the tiny street all the way to the end of the hamlet.

TIP: The peaceful atmosphere in Lin is best enjoyed if you spend at least one night here. Watching the sunrise from the cliff above the village is unforgettable.
