The lakes of Ulza and Shkopet are located near the town of Burrel and form a picturesque pair of reservoir lakes along the Mat River. Ulza Lake (Liqeni i Ulzës) is the larger of the two, known for its calm waters surrounded by forested hills—perfect for hiking, picnics, or simply relaxing in nature. Just a few kilometers downstream lies the smaller Shkopet Lake (Liqeni i Shkopetit), nestled between steep cliffs that give it a dramatic and romantic character. This area is one of the most visited parts of the Mat region.
If you’d like to spend more time at Ulza Lake, the best base is the nearby village of Ulza (also spelled Ulëz), located just below the dam. It’s easily accessible via a two-kilometer paved road branching off the main highway.
A small tourist resort called Ulza Eco Park has recently opened here. For just €10, you can also stay at the cozy family-run Guesthouse Ulza, hosted by the incredibly hospitable Ndrek and Marjeta Çoku (+355 682 819 952, see map for location). You’re even welcome to pitch your own tent in their garden. The view across the lake on Deja Mountain (2244 meters) on the horizon is simply stunning.

This lake is best known for its pair of suspension bridges stretched just above the water’s surface. The first of these photogenic crossings—resembling something you’d expect to find in the Himalayas—is located at a bend in the lake, near a small pebble beach by the mouth of a stream. You can park your car along the road and walk down to the lake—the path takes no more than five minutes.
The other bridge lies about 5 km further toward the dam; reaching it also requires a short descent of several dozen meters. Roughly halfway between the two bridges, right next to the main road, you’ll find a newly built scenic viewpoint.
Adventurous travellers should not miss the Uraka Canyon (Kanioni i Urakës) east of Ulza Lake. Start the hike to the canyon in the village of Bruç or Prell (a little further up). The path leads also along the former irrigation canal and at one point you will have to go through a tunnel. So have a torch with you!
Another hidden gem is the majestic Val Cave, located not far away from Ulza Lake – on the border between Mat and Mirditë regions.
