Koman Lake
A breathtaking cruise on Koman Lake (Liqeni i Komanit) is one of the most amazing attractions in Albania. The landscape, with the gigantic cliffs of the Drin Canyon, resembles the Norwegian fjords. A must is a boat trip to the Shala River which belongs to the most photogenic places in Albania. The beaches and lush vegetation here will make you feel like you’re in Thailand.
Shkodra Lake
Skadar Lake (Liqeni i Shkodrës) is the largest lake in the Balkans. The best swimming spots in its Albanian part can be found on the southeastern coast. There are several public beaches in the villages of Shirokë or Zogaj on its southern coast, which are frequent weekend trip destinations for the locals. From the renowned local fish restaurants, you can enjoy fantastic views across the lake to the rising foothills of the Albanian Alps. Swimming in the Shegan Eye Spring or the Lake Shkodra Resort on the east side of the lake is also a wonderful experience.
Ohrid Lake
The small fishing village of Lin is one of the most beautiful places on the Albanian side of the Ohrid Lake. Its stunning location under a cliff on the shores of the lake makes it a popular tourist destination. Besides swimming, you can take a boat trip or see the remains of an early Christian church. A nice place to swim in Ohrid Lake is also at the beach in Pogradec.
Prespa Lake
The uninhabited island of Maligrad on Prespa Lake is one of the places with the greatest genius loci in Albania. On the shores, there are several miniature beaches where you can enjoy swimming in summer. Na pevnině je hned naproti ostrovu krásné místo s pláží a nově zrestaurovanou kaplí sv. Mikuláše.
Dumrea Lakes
Dumrea (or Dumreja) is a small, not yet much-visited area south of Elbasan. It consists of a picturesque hilly landscape dotted with 85 lakes, the most beautiful of which is the water lily-studded Seferan Lake (Liqeni i Seferanit). The region is ideal for quiet relaxation and spending time with the kids.
The Blue Eye
The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is a stunning azure-coloured mountain lake with a waterfall flowing into it. It can be found in the heart of the Albanian Alps seven kilometres from the village of Theth. It’s a tough place to swim because the water is chilly even in the summer. But nothing beats cooling off with a swim on a hot day.
Ulza Lake
The Ulza Lake (Liqeni i Ulzës) is a large reservoir on the Mat River, which is increasingly popular among Albanians. It offers opportunities for peaceful relaxation, and sports activities and is also popular with fishermen. It is the most visited tourist spot in the region Mat, if you want to stay overnight, the village of Ulëz is ideal.
