National parks represent some of Albania’s most prized natural treasures, offering a diverse array of landscapes, ecosystems, and outdoor recreational opportunities. There are 12 national parks in total, covering about 11 per cent of the Albanian territory.
Some, such as the northern Albanian Alps, or Llogara and Butrint in the south, have already earned a firm place on tourist maps and guidebooks.
Others, like Shebenik-Jabllanicë on the border with North Macedonia or Bredhi i Hotovës in southeastern Albania, have virtually no tourism infrastructure and are home to wilderness areas visitors rarely visit.
Truly unique is the Divjakë-Karavasta National Park, home to one of the largest lagoons in the Mediterranean. It serves as a vital habitat for diverse bird species, including flamingos and pelicans.
The rugged coastline with its many cliffs, caves, canyons and rich fauna and flora can be admired in the Marine National Park Karaburun-Sazan.
Albania’s newest national park is unique in particular. Declared in March 2023, it encompasses the entire Vjosa River, its banks and three of its tributaries.
The national parks Bredhi i Drenovës and Qafë Shtamë have been abolished recently and their protection status reduced to a protected landscape area and a nature park, respectively.
