Renting a car is the best way to explore Albania’s diverse landscape and rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re planning a drive through the rugged mountains, a beach holiday or a trip to the capital of Tirana, a rental car will give you the freedom and flexibility to enjoy your holiday to the fullest.
Where to rent a car in Albania?
Over the years of travelling to Albania, I have tested a number of car rental companies, ranging from large international ones to small local businesses, often offering only a few battered vehicles that you are afraid to get into.
The best experience thus far has been with Rent From Locals which includes offers of Albanian rental companies and even individuals. Its main advantages include lower prices and, more importantly, looser rental terms. No credit card is requiered, for example. It’s possible to ‘check’ all providers in reviews.
Through Rent From Locals, you can also cheaply rent 4x4s, minibuses or even scooters or motorbikes. In addition to Tirana and the international airport, you can pick up a car at Shkodër, Vlorë, Sarandë, Durrës and other cities.
It is an Albanian company, so renting a car here means direct support for the local economy.
How much does a rental car in Albania cost?
Car rental in Albania is cheap compared to other European countries. Prices for smaller cars start at 10 euros per day in low season. However, they rise sharply in summer. I suggest booking well in advance as the offer dwindles quickly. Most rental companies have a free cancellation policy.
What to be wary of when renting a car in Albania?
Reading the terms carefully is essential. For example, some companies limit the maximum number of kilometres you can drive, while others do not allow you to go anywhere off the paved roads. Some rental companies also require a credit card at pick-up and charge you a higher price if you don’t have one.
If you are delayed in picking up your car, due to a delayed flight, always notify the rental company in advance. There is usually a clause in the rental terms that allows the company to hand the car over to another customer if the delay exceeds one hour.
In Albania, people over 18 can drive, but many car rental companies require a minimum age of 21 to rent a car. If the driver is under 25, the rental company may charge extra fees.
What documents do I need to rent a car in Albania?
A passport (or ID) and a driving licence are needed to rent a car in Albania. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is generally not required if you have a European, UK or USA driving licence. A credit card is required by some rental car companies.
Can I rent an off-road car in Albania?
Yes, and there is perhaps no better country in Europe for offroading than Albania. You can travel across endless mountain roads to reach locations you would never otherwise be able to.
I’ve had an excellent experience with a car rental company The Lada Guys in Tirana, which rents Lady Niva and other off-road vehicles. Fair approach with a minimum of red tape, they don’t look too hard at the inevitable minor scratches. Rentals are around 70-80 euros per day. Lada Niva is certainly the most comfortable car, but it’s incredibly fun to drive.
On Rent From Locals, you can rent cheaper 4×4 SUVs that are enough for easy to moderate offroading.
