Rrëshen is the capital and only real city of the region of Mirditë. It was a small village until 1949 when the communists started to build industry here. There is a cathedral, but otherwise, the town serves more as a starting point for exploring other parts of Mirditë. Visit the famous Arbëri winery.
After World War II, the communist regime tried to eliminate the clan structure in northern Albania. The traditional centre of Mirditë was therefore moved from Orosh to Rrëshen which was built on a greenfield. Apart from the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (Katedralja e Jezusi i Vetmi Shpëtimtar i Botës), built in the 1990s, you won’t find any other landmarks here.
But you can also visit the well-known Arbëri winery in the eastern suburbs, which supplies the Vatican and some of the most renowned restaurants in Albania with its red and white wines produced from the region’s vineyards.
