Borsh

The area near the village of Borsh is the only flat stretch of the Albanian Riviera, and it is best known for its olive orchards and olive oil production. The main tourist attraction here, apart from the six-kilometres-long beach, is the Sopot Castle.

Borsh Beach (Plazhi i Borshit) is the longest on the Albanian Riviera and is easily accessible. Yet, it is relatively undeveloped and is sought after for its overall tranquillity. You can still park your car almost anywhere.

The village of Borsh itself is located about two kilometres from the shore, on the main road between Sarandë and Vlorë. From there, it is another two kilometres to Sopot Castle (Kalaja e Sopotit or Kalaja e Borshit), which stands on top of a hill about 250 metres high. The hike from the village takes about half an hour and starts in the village square at the pleasant Ujvara restaurant, where tables are placed right next to waterfalls.

The first mention of the castle dates back to 1258. However, archaeological findings show that there were fortifications on the site as early as the 4th century BC. What remains of the castle today dates back to the time of the Ottoman ruler Ali Pasha of Tepelena, who had it rebuilt in the 18th century, taking advantage of its strategic location guarding the path from the sea to the hinterland. He also built a mosque, which is today the only building of the castle still standing.

During communism, an olive processing plant was established in Borsh and almost the entire alluvial plain around the village was reserved for olive trees. The olive oil produced here can be found in every major Albanian shop, and is also exported abroad.
