The thermal baths near Elbasan (Llixhat e Elbasanit) have been an increasingly popular place for health tourism in Albania since the interwar period. The healing quality of local springs was known already in the Roman era.
In 1924 the first analysis of the local mineral waters was carried out in Prague, then Czechoslovakia. Beno Winter, director of the spa in Marienbad, visited the region in the 1930s and confirmed that the local sulphur waters were suitable for treating various ailments, rheumatism chief among them. In 1932, the first spa hotel was opened.
In recent years, the offer of accommodation has been expanding rapidly and currently, there are already about 40 hotels and guesthouses. Some of them are either constructed directly on the springs or bring in hot water through pipes. Several springs reach temperatures of over 60 degrees and the water from them must be cooled before use.
Most hotels offer spa stays as well as the possibility of one-off visits with baths or mud wraps. There are also small outdoor pools in which visitors can get their feet wet.
The thermal baths are located in the village of Tregan, which is a 12-kilometre drive from Elbasan towards Gramsh. Most Albanians call the place simply llixhat, meaning spa in english.
