If there was a competition for the most beautiful waterfall in Albania, the one near the village of Sotira would have a good chance to win. It’s basically a river that rises to the surface from rock crevices at the foothill of Mount Tomorr. The natural gem is located in a secluded area near the town of Gramsh. You certainly won’t be pushing through the crowds here.
There are actually two waterfalls. The left one is a 100 m high cascade of a stream flowing between the rocks. The right one is lower, but the powerful stream here flows directly from the cliff. The water is crystal clear and very cold which is what you can test in the pool below the waterfall.
The waterfalls are most spectacular in spring when the underground river has the most water. The view from the meadow in the opposite of the waterfalls is the most spectacular.
From the village of Sotira the waterfall can be reached by foot (1 hour) or by high clearance vehicle (20 min). There is a daily minibus from Gramsh to Sotira village, and the 16-kilometre gravel road is passable even by ordinary car, though it’s full of potholes, especially at the end. There is a good restaurant at the main crossroad.
TIP: For 1,500 leks, you can book a jeep-taxi at the Refati restaurant in Gramsh, to get to the Sotira Waterfall. Several agencies offer daytrips also from Berat.
Off-road cars can reach Sotira village also from Berat via Tomorr National Park (village of Dardhë).
