At the village of Selca e Poshtme, located in the larger area of Ohrid Lake, you can find the royal tombs of the Illyrian city of Pelion. They are carved into the rock on a steep slope at the top of a terraced hill, with their facade adorned with Ionic columns. The archaeological site is significant enough to the Albanian government that it has been suggested for the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1996.
The burial site with a total of five tombs is de facto the only remnant of the ancient settlement, which experienced its heyday in the 4th to 1st century BC, when it was part of the Roman Empire. The necropolis is located at a height of 1040 metres above sea level on the right bank of the river Shkumbin. The Roman Via Egnatia led past it.
The place is rarely visited because of its remoteness: it is 15 kilometres along a mostly gravel road from Prrenjas. There is a minibus from Pogradec to Selcë every day around noon, returning the next day in the morning. A new highway is under construction leading through the Shkumbin Valley to Pogradec, which will make the tombs easily accessible once completed.
