Among the most significant Catholic structures in the region of Mirditë is the Church of the Ascension (Kisha e Shëlbuemit) in Rubik. Constructed around 1166 on an elevated location in the bend of the Fan River, it was a part of a Franciscan monastery. The church is only a kilometre from the highway, making it a great place to stop for a quick rest on your travels.
The monastery was destroyed during the Second World War and has been abandoned ever since. The Church of the Ascension is the only building in the complex that has been restored and is still serving its original purpose.
From the church, there is a nice view of the deep Fan Valley. Just across the river is the newly renovated copper processing plant. In the town itself, there are several restaurants and cafes on the main street.
About a kilometre north of Rubik’s is a small ethnographic museum connected to the Info-Kulla information centre. You can be advised on accommodation, sights to visit in Mirditë or buy local products.
