Bajram Curri, named after an Albanian national hero, is the biggest town in the Tropojë region. Situated beneath the Albanian Alps, it serves as a gateway to the mesmerizing Valbona Valley and spectacular Koman Lake.
The city was named after the Albanian national hero Bajram Curri, who successfully fought against the Turks at the end of the Ottoman rule in Albania. After World War I, he became a minister and army commander in the newly established Albania. Due to the conflict with the then president and later king Ahmet Zog, he was surrounded by government troops in the northern Albanian mountains near the Dragobi Cave in 1925 and committed suicide rather than fall into captivity. A large statue of him stands in the town, looking down majestically on the main square.

Apart from being a natural transport hub and an ideal base for exploring various parts of Tropojë, there’s not much to do here. The town was built in the communist era on the site of the village of Kolgecaj and does not have any historic sights. The only museum here was looted in 1997 and has been closed ever since.
