Lengarica Canyon (Kanioni i Lengaricës) is a stunning natural wonder located near the town of Përmet, within the scenic Bredhi i Hotovës National Park. Known for its dramatic landscape, the canyon features soaring cliffs, hidden caves, and natural hot springs that create an unforgettable setting. Though smaller and less expansive than the nearby Osum Canyon, Lengarica rivals it in beauty and allure.
Stretching for about five kilometres, the canyon begins just behind the newly built dam on the Lengarica River and ends at the historic Kadiu Bridge near the Bënja hot springs, where the gorge opens into a broader valley. In places, the canyon narrows to just three metres across, while its cliffs rise up to 150 metres high—making a walk along the riverbed a truly immersive experience.
Among its many caves, one has revealed archaeological evidence of prehistoric life dating back to the Copper Age and was later used by the Illyrians, adding historical depth to this already captivating destination.

In summer, when the water level is low, you can walk through the entire canyon along the riverbed. The route begins at the Kadiu Bridge, and after about two hours of hiking, you’ll reach a small footbridge near the dam. From there, it’s possible to return along paths on either the left or right side of the canyon.
The most scenic spots are at three key points: shortly after starting out—just 10 to 15 minutes past the Kadiu Bridge; around the halfway mark, where side ravines join the main canyon from both left and right; and in the final section before the dam, where the gorge becomes its deepest and narrowest.
Be prepared to wade frequently, with water often reaching above the waist, but there are no major obstacles along the way. It’s highly recommended to bring a waterproof bag for valuables and electronics. You can see the route map here.
WARNING: Thunderstorms and sudden downpours can be extremely dangerous while in the canyon. Always check the weather forecast in advance. If you’re unsure about going alone, consider hiring a local guide.

An unforgettable circular hike of around four hours also begins at the Kadiu Bridge, following both sides of the Lengarica Canyon. The route offers numerous viewpoints over the main gorge, side ravines, and—outside the summer season—several waterfalls. The trail, one of the most popular in all of southeastern Albania, is well-marked and easy to follow. About halfway along both the outbound and return legs, take a short detour to the rocky ledges overlooking the dramatic meeting point of the three canyons. You can find the route map here.

One of the most popular activities offered by local agencies is horseback riding in the area surrounding the Lengarica Canyon.
About three kilometres from the Kadiu Bridge lies the village of Bënja, known for its traditional stone houses and the recently restored Church of the Virgin Mary (Kisha e Shën Mërisë), surrounded by cypress trees. Thanks to its charm and historical significance, the village has been declared a cultural heritage site.
